Why Alexander-Arnold and Foden should not go to World Cup
Thomas Tuchel insists it is “all about the team” now that England have qualified for next summer’s World Cup, hinting that some big names may struggle to make his final squad for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
So which players are in trouble? We asked Telegraph Sport’s football writers to explain who they would leave at home next summer.

Maguire out of reckoning despite centre-back shortage
Trent Alexander-Arnold
The right-back is the biggest name expected to miss out. The 27-year-old needed to hit the ground running at Real Madrid to force his way in but has so far failed to convince Thomas Tuchel.
Harry Maguire
The centre-half was dropped from the squad for Euro 2024 at the last minute even though he argued he had recovered from a calf injury and, at 32, has slipped out of the reckoning despite a dearth of players in his position. Maguire is also not an automatic starter at Manchester United.
Ivan Toney
England still lack depth at centre-forward but having been called up by Thomas Tuchel, and then not played a single minute of the disastrous June camp that so affected the England head coach, he appears no longer under consideration.
Kyle Walker
It will hurt the 35-year-old if he does not play for England again. Walker seemed to be one of the stalwarts on whom Tuchel depended but was not even called to inform him he was not making the squad. The right-back is in danger of being marooned on 96 caps.
Morgan Gibbs-White
The Nottingham Forest playmaker has done well for England and continues to be selected in the squad by Tuchel. But he is likely to be squeezed out when the World Cup comes simply because of the array of attacking talent that England have.
Henderson over Wharton is a strange move
Kyle Walker
Reece James is Tuchel’s first-choice right-back and will start at the World Cup if fit. That brings with it an obvious gamble over James’s ability to stay injury free for an entire tournament, but Tuchel also has Tino Livramento to call on, while Alexander-Arnold may not have given up hope of forcing his way back before the World Cup starts.
Jordan Henderson
Recalled by Tuchel, Henderson last week insisted he is not just an in-camp cheerleader and the midfielder’s experience is something the England head coach values highly. But leaving out Adam Wharton to make space for Henderson appears strange and the former England captain will celebrate his 36th birthday during next year’s World Cup.
