Roy Keane managerial return 'stance' clear after Man Utd legend's hint

Manchester United icon Roy Keane's position regarding a managerial comeback appears crystal clear, according to Martin O'Neill. The 73-year-old collaborated with the former United midfielder whilst they were in control of the Republic of Ireland national squad, though both departed that role in 2018.

The duo would later reunite at the City Ground for a short period overseeing Nottingham Forest in 2019, but neither have accepted a coaching position since that time. Both ex-players have dedicated recent years to media work as pundits, though Keane was strongly connected with the available managerial role at Sunderland in 2022, before Alex Neil's appointment.

Whilst Keane hasn't completely dismissed a managerial comeback, the 54-year-old appears satisfied with his punditry work, featuring on television programmes and podcasts.

Keane recently disclosed that he was interviewed by the FAI regarding the Republic of Ireland manager's position before Heimir Hallgrimsson's appointment.

"I would doubt it very much," O'Neill told OLBG when asked if Keane would be the next Republic of Ireland manager.

"However, as I'm getting older and he is enjoying himself in life, seems to be, know, he's doing all his punditry to work and getting adverts on TV and things like this here.

"So I'm quite sure he's probably not thinking about going into management.

"But if he did and asked me along as the assistant, you know, to have a little cigarette mainly... or as a chief scout for him living down in southern Italy.

"Yes, I'll take that. I'll take that all day long."

Keane has hinted at a potential move overseas in the future. "In the next couple of years, I reckon I will be moving abroad... putting it out there," he revealed to the Overlap trio Jamie Carragher, Ian Wright and Gary Neville during their On Tour episode in Turin.

When quizzed about his preferred destination, Keane responded: "Do you know what, Switzerland, maybe? Switzerland is beautiful."
