Wife of US security boss promises to 'own Greenland soon' after Trump's Venezuelan coup
Just a few hours after Trump launched strikes in Venezuela and captured its president and his wife, fears of the US invading another country surged across social media.
Moreover, the wife of a top US security official sparked outrage online after posting a US-flagged map of Greenland with a questionable caption. The caption in question, “SOON”, left many fuming as they believed it suggested an invasion and an illegal occupation of the democratic and self-governing Danish territory.
Taking to her X page (formerly known as Twitter) on Saturday evening (January 3), Katie Miller, the wife of a top US security official, posted a map of Greenland completely covered in an American flag.
The post ignited fury, as an X user commented alongside a flag of Greenland: “Greenlandic citizen here. Shame on you.
“I hope you are left with a bitter taste in your mouth. This will not happen.
“The United States has long been regarded as an ally — but America’s reputation is in free fall when American citizens like you express this kind of mindset.” A person wrote: “Venezuela narrative was straightforward.
“Dictator. There is no narrative against Greenland.
“I doubt this will ever happen. Besides, they are part of Denmark, NATO member.” Another observer replied: “You should read about what happened to the Nazi wives in 1945.”
Someone else penned: “Last I looked, The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, is not a dictator. So what will be your excuse for trying to steal their land and resources?”
A netizen added: “Anyways, looking forward to seeing you and your husband at The Hague for war crimes!” An additional user asked: “Are you threatening Europe?”
A commentator exclaimed: “Outrageous. Denmark is a loyal ally and part of Nato.
“To even hint at taking over a sovereign democratic friend and ally is shameful.” A separate individual chimed in: “Your actions were both pathological and immoral.
“Only the people of Greenland have the right to determine their future. Greenland is an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
“Occupying the territory of a NATO ally is a profoundly immoral act.”
Katie Miller is the wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller. The Donald Trump administration has a stated interest in acquiring the autonomous Danish territory.
As a key policy advisor, Stephen Miller is seen as an architect of much of the US president’s administration's policy, including potentially influencing foreign policy thinking related to the Arctic. Additionally, Trump has repeatedly and publicly expressed a desire to bring Greenland under US control, citing national security concerns and mineral reserves.
Nevertheless, Jesper Møller Sørensen, the Danish Ambassador to the US, responded directly on X by asserting that Denmark expects "full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark". He highlighted that Denmark and the US are "close allies" and noted that Denmark committed $13.7 billion in 2025 alone to Arctic security to demonstrate its commitment to the region.
In her recent New Year address, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that Denmark will "stand firm" against pressure from its "closest ally" regarding the takeover of "another country, another people". She described the rhetoric as something out of a past where countries could be bought and owned, and stressed that Greenland is not for sale.
Meanwhile, Greenland’s Prime Minister has consistently rejected these ambitions, stating, "Our decisions are made here", and affirming that Greenland does not belong to anyone else. And for the first time, Danish intelligence services formally identified the United States as a potential security challenge in late 2025, citing Washington’s willingness to use economic and military pressure to enforce its will on allies.
