Oliver Glasner fumes at Crystal Palace hierarchy for 'abandoning' team after quit decision

Oliver Glasner launched a scathing attack on the Crystal Palace hierarchy following their defeat to Sunderland on Saturday. Glasner, who has been linked to the Manchester United position, revealed his plans to quit Palace at the season's end on Friday - just hours after it emerged that Marc Guehi would be joining Manchester City.

It marked the latest blow in what has been a dreadful week for Palace, who endured one of the most shocking FA Cup giant-killings in memory against non-league Macclesfield last weekend. Things deteriorated further when they succumbed to another defeat against Sunderland, despite grabbing the opener in the clash at the Stadium of Light.

Pulling no punches during his post-match interview following the latest defeat, Glasner launched a withering critique of the Palace board - declaring he felt betrayed by the club's leadership. The furious Austrian told Sky Sports: "The players gave everything they could, look at the bench just kids.

"We feel we're being abandoned, selling our captain one day before a game. No understanding of this. Yesterday I got told at 10.30am he's [Guehi] being sold, why not next week? It makes me really upset."

Glasner went on to mention that this marked the second occasion it had occurred this season, drawing parallels to Eberechi Eze's switch to Arsenal.

He continued: "If you heart gets torn out twice a year, with Eze one day before a game in the summer. Now your captain one day before a game. I have no understanding. I've been in football almost 30 years, I've never experienced this once and now it happens twice in six or seven months.

"I think this is just where we are now."

Guehi is anticipated to complete a medical at City on Sunday ahead of a reported £20million transfer - £15m less than Palace were poised to collect for the English international from Liverpool in the summer.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt manager went on: "Yesterday at 10.30am I heard that the first time we were selling Marc. We have to deal with it, one day before a game going to Sunderland.

"We know we aren't in the best of runs. We don't have players available and we're selling our captain.

"Completely no understanding. No [other] team would do this. I've seen other teams, players play and, then, the next day they're leaving.

"But we're selling the day before?" When pressed about whether the club's troubles might see him depart before the campaign concludes, the 51-year-old remained coy about his future.

He responded: "I don't know. I have huge appreciation for this group of players, their character is exceptional. We will stick together and get this turnaround, these players deserve Oliver Glasner as their manager. It would help if we had a little bit of support."
