Prabowo launches revamped Tanah Abang Station to boost rail services

President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the upgraded Tanah Abang Train Station, now named Tanah Abang Baru Station, in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, marking the completion of a two-year revitalization project that began in April 2023.

The president boarded a commuter line (KRL) train from Manggarai Station and arrived at the newly renovated Tanah Abang Baru Station at 11:18 a.m. local time, after passing through five stations.

During the trip, he was accompanied by Minister of State Secretariat Prasetyo Hadi, Government Communication Agency Head Angga Raka, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

Upon his arrival, President Prabowo was welcomed by Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo, and state-run railway company PT KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin.

He then proceeded to the main entrance podium to deliver his inauguration remarks.

“Today, we are gathering at one of the most historical stations in Indonesia to inaugurate Tanah Abang Baru Station,” the president said, opening the speech.

He expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Transportation and PT KAI for their role in accelerating the modernization of Indonesia’s public transportation system, particularly in urban areas.

Prabowo highlighted that the national railway network currently serves around 486 million passengers annually, making it a vital sector alongside food and energy security.

The comprehensive renovation of Tanah Abang Station, which began with a groundbreaking ceremony on April 30, 2023, was aimed at tackling severe overcrowding.

Reopened to the public since February 2025, the upgraded facility now features a modernized facade, an expanded main entrance, and dedicated pedestrian lanes separated from street vendors, enhancing passenger comfort and accessibility.

During a meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday (November 3), President Prabowo, with PT KAI President Director Rasyidin, discussed the government’s ongoing efforts to further enhance and strengthen the railway network

He called on PT KAI to continue revitalizing stations and expanding the number of train carriages to accommodate millions of daily passengers.
