Arne Slot’s Key Decision Over Liverpool Ace vs Leicester Shows He Has No Anfield Future
Arne Slot’s Liverpool inevitably lifting the Premier League trophy will have to wait another week after this weekend’s set of results – but the Anfield faithful are trying to come to terms with a decision made by the Dutch tactician ahead of their Leicester City clash.
The fact that Arsenal, who are expected to finish second for a third season on the trot, beat Ipswich Town 4-0 earlier on Sunday meant that the Reds were unable to be crowned champions, irrespective of the result against the Foxes.
GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Arne Slot, should Liverpool win the league, will become the fifth manager in Premier League history to do so in their maiden campaign.
At the King Power Stadium, the Premier League table toppers ran out 1–0 victors – but Federico Chiesa’s omission was a point of contention, especially with Trent Alexander-Arnold instantly returning to proceedings after recovering from a recent injury problem.
‘Slot’s treatment of a player with Chiesa’s talent is rather worrying to me’
According to a report from the Liverpool Echo, there are no signs that Chiesa has suffered an injury concern – and it’s instead that Slot had opted for other players to make up his 20-man squad for a trip to relegation-doomed Leicester ahead of the Italian.
Much of the Genova-born ace’s time in England has been blighted by injury but, even since returning to action, Slot and his entourage have used him as a sporadic option. Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and the like have been preferred.
The summer signing from Juventus, 27, has made just four appearances during the charge towards a 20th English top flight crown. All in all, the 51-cap Italy international has racked up 12 appearances – equating to 395 minutes – in all competitions.
There were very few Liverpool fans who expected the £150,000-per-week earner to start every game. He arrived at Anfield with a history of injury issues – but the fact that an out-of-sorts Darwin Nunez, who arguably has a worse work ethic than Chiesa, was included has baffled supporters.
Referencing the fact that Alexander-Arnold, who is destined to leave in the summer amid concrete links to Real Madrid, was included ahead of the winger, one fan said: “Dropped Chiesa from the squad for a guy who doesn’t want to be here?”
Reacting with bemusement, another wrote: “Sad to see no Federico Chiesa on the bench. What a strange scenario,” before a third member of the Anfield faithful said: “Slot’s treatment of a player with Chiesa’s talent is rather worrying to me, I can’t lie.”
Another fan subtly prompted a match-going journalist to question Slot’s decision to leave Chiesa on the bench – and, in this case, completely omit him from proceedings when he’s a more than viable option that can flip a game’s fortunes on its head.
“Is a journalist of some sort every gonna question Slot on his decision to constantly ignore Chiesa? I’m seriously intrigued to know what his issue with him is.”
Another insinuated a feeling of compassion for the wide man, who is yet to start a Premier League game for the Merseysiders. “This Chiesa situation is taking the p*** now – why bring him in to completely shun him for the season? Feel bad for the lad.”
